GameStop Credit Card Review

Whether you’re a dedicated gamer or irregularly shop at GameStop, know that there are considerably better options for you than the GameSpot Credit Card. Unlike most other store credit cards, the GameSpot Credit Card doesn’t offer any important benefits for signing up. Users can earn a low sign-up bonus and not much else. The GameSpot Credit Card currently doesn’t offer cardholders enough value to deserve signing up. Most people will be better off with another rewards credit card and simply using GameStop’s regular rewards card.

The card advertises the ability to pay off your purchases later. However, with a high APR of 27.24%, we don’t recommend anyone do that. Otherwise your interest charges will be through the roof.

The best option for most people will be to sign up for cash back credit card and the GameStop‘s PowerUp Rewards program.

That way, you can earn your cash back rewards and PowerUp rewards on top of that. There are zero incentives, both from a financing and rewards point of view, to apply for this store credit card.

Even if you have bad credit and don’t think you can get approved for a better card, there are many secured credit cards that come with significantly better rebates.

GameStop Credit Card Benefits & Features

The GameStop Credit Card is a simple product whose primary offering appears to be the ability to finance purchases at GameStop.

The credit card comes with a PowerUp point bonus after your first purchase, and no way to earn additional points after that. To be clear, you will earn PowerUp points with every purchase using the GameSpot Credit Card.

However, you could just as well earn the same amount of recompense points with the ordinary PowerUp association – you don’t get any special point-boost for using the credit card, as you typically would with other store-branded credit cards.

Annual Fee No Annual Fee
Purchase APR 27.24%

What Are Some Good Alternatives to the GameStop Credit Card?

Gamers who want to use a GameStop credit card to buy things at Gamestop or elsewhere have bounty of good options to choose from. Below, we outline some of the best alternatives based on your financial situation.

Best for those with good or excellent credit: Chase Freedom Unlimited

The Chase Freedom Unlimited was ValuePenguin’s best cash back GameStop credit card for 2017, and it’s an excellent choice for avid gamers. The card gives a flat 1.5% cash back rate on all your purchases.

That means you can get a 1.5% discount no matter where you’re shopping – GameStop, Steam, Amazon, the PlayStation Store, etc.

Furthermore, there is a great $150 bonus for those who manage to charge at least $500 to the card within the first 3 months of cardmembership.

For example, if you use the Chase Freedom Unlimited to buy an HTC Vive, which currently retails for $799, you have the potential to get $150 back. That is significantly better than the measly $12 bonus you get with the GameSpot Credit Card.

Best Cash Back Option (without a bonus): Citi Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer

The Citi Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer will give you one of the best cash back rates for GameStop purchases of any credit card. Users earn 1% cash back at the time of purchase and then another 1% when that purchase is paid off.

If you frequently shop at GameStop this will quickly add up to a lot of savings, no matter what you buy there. The GameSpot Credit Card doesn’t give you any rewards or cash back beyond its initial point bonus.

One major drawback to the Citi Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer worth noting is that it doesn’t have any welcome bonus.

Many other cash back cards, including the Chase Freedom Unlimited we mentioned above, can give you as much as $150 for meeting some specific requirements.

Best for those with bad credit: Discover it Secured Card - No Annual Fee

The Discover it Secured Card - No Annual Fee is one of the few credit cards to allow people with bad credit to earn cash back rewards.

While these rewards won’t be as good as what you can get with other credit cards, you can still score decent discounts on games and all other types of purchases you may be making.

Users earn 2% cash back at restaurants or gas stations on up to $1,000 in combined purchases each quarter, and 1% back on all other purchases. Like the GameStop Credit Card, this isn’t a card you want to carry a balance on. It has a high APR of 23.74%.

Best for those who want low interest: Citi Simplicity Card – No Late Fees Ever

While it doesn’t give you any rewards, the Citi Simplicity Card – No Late Fees Ever can give you 0% interest for a whopping 21 months.

In general, we don’t suggest users carry a balance on their credit card. You particularly shouldn’t finance purchases you’d be making at GameStop or any other video game stores.

However, if you are set on doing that anyway, the Citi Simplicity Card – No Late Fees Ever is the way to go. You won’t have to pay any interest for close to 2 years, assuming you continue to make all your payments on time.

That should be plenty of time to pay off anything you decide to finance – whether it’s a new game console or a virtual reality headset.
