Microsoft Announce Cross Network Support: Xbox One to play against PS4

Microsoft is announcing a big new feature for Xbox One Owners today: cross network play. It’s something the software giant has hinted at for years, and how it’s seems the reality of PS4, Xbox One, and PC players playing the game collectively might finally happen. Developers building games for Xbox One and Windows 10 will be able to support the feature, but it will require Sony and others to “participate” in order for games to be played across Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Psyonix’s hit game Rocket association will be the first cross-network title, as that game is already cross-platform between Windows and PS4. We can expect more games later this spring.

Now, it’s important to note that in the original announcement, they seemed careful to not say anything about the PS4. The term they used was “other consoles”. But come on, We all know what that means.

It’s completely up to developers to decide if cross network or cross-platform is something they want to include in their games.

If I were a betting man, I’d say the new Call of Duty being developed by Infinity Ward for later this year seems like quite the candidate for this stuff.

Opening up online multiplayer gaming across different platforms will remove a big constraint in console gaming, but it will also create a conversation around which titles should allow PC gamers to play against consoles.

A mouse and keyboard can still have many advantages over a gamepad for first-person shooters, so it’s a new challenge that game developers will have to balance for cross-network play.

Pretty soon, video game players on an Xbox One could battle against owners of the PlayStation 4 without needing to switch consoles.

Currently, Microsoft allows cross-platform play. As long as users have an Xbox Live account, compatible games will support players on Xbox or a Windows 10 PC.

The cross network feature could allow players on Sony’s PlayStation Network, for example, battle friends on an Xbox One in the same game.

Here are a few games we want cross platform play support to be implemented on.

Grand Theft Auto Online

GTA V’s online component is fast becoming an AAA gaming experience on its own and has quite an active community. What better than to bring two of the largest GTA online communities together via this feature.

 Next Call of Duty game

Activision can pull off a masterstroke by announcing that its new CoD title would support cross-platform play between the PS4 and Xbox One.

This would be a great incentive for gamers looking to make a purchase and since Call of Duty has possibly the biggest online gaming community, it would make their experience seamless.

 The Division

Ubisoft’s recently released open world online shooter would make for another launch title for this feature to be implemented between both the platforms.

The nature of the game allows it to utilize this feature to its fullest probable and would result in a far more spirited and superior gaming experience for anyone who’s got the game, irrespective of the platform they’re playing on.
