Hidden Samsung Galaxy S8 features

THE Samsung Galaxy S8 isn’t just a Smartphone; it’s a superphone, arguably the handset of 2017, and a device that’s leaving all competition, including the Samsung Galaxy S7 in its wake. Much of the Samsung Galaxy S8 jaw-dropping charm, can be pegged on the phone’s stunning new design, finished with its expansive, near edge-to-edge Infinity Display.

Samsung Galaxy S8 is 5.8-inch, curved edged, 2560 x 1440 pixel QHD Super AMOLED display might be an eye catcher, but it’s not the only big win, being backed up by a mass of high-end components, including a powerful octa-core processor, 4GB of RAM and a brilliant, low-light specialising 12-megapixel camera.

This is a phone about a whole lot more than headline-grabbing specs and fancy features though. Scratch beneath the surface and there’s a wealth of hidden features just waiting to be discovered.

Like we said, the Samsung Galaxy S8’s fingerprint scanner isn’t perfect. It’s a good job then that the phone offers other biometric unlock options, including an inbuilt iris scanner and facial recognition.

Both have their quirks, their benefits and their cons, and each will give you a kick of feeling like you’re in the future as your phone unlocks just by looking at it. When the novelty inevitably wears off though, it’s time to mix things up. That’s where screen masks come in.

Fun more than efficient, these screen masks show you where to line up your eyes for the iris scanner in engaging fashion.

Ever wondered what you’d look like as a pilot from the ‘40s, a roman gladiator or a robot? Well now you don’t have to just select the corresponding mask and see for yourself whenever you unlock your phone.

Prefer something more friendly? How about looking like a deep sea diver, woodland creature or gingerbread man? All can be accessed by heading Settings > Lock Screen and Security > Iris Scanner > Preview screen mask.

Treat in a bold Facebook session or work your way through that lengthy to-do list?

With a Samsung Galaxy S8 in hand, the choices are frequent and the decisions tricky.

This isn’t a phone that’s going to force you into reasonable decisions over fun ones though. Instead, the phone lets you enjoy split screen multitasking and have two apps open concurrently.

Made possible by the phone’s extra-large display, to activate the split screen mode, you’ll need to open the multitasking menu and select the split screen view on your desired apps.

You can do this by critical the icon that looks like two small rectangles and once picked, drag your finger to resize the windows and give bonus billing to one app or the other. Now you can get work done and enjoy yourself at the same time.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 has a great camera. Its 12-megapixel sensor is improved by a wide aperture f/1.7 lens that’s great at capturing low-light snaps.

While the camera’s auto mode will delivery solid, all-round images in all shooting conditions, however, you can capture the perfect photo by delving into the camera’s ‘Pro’ mode.

Accessed by swiping in from the left hand side of the screen and tapping the ‘Pro’ option, Pro mode gives you the ability to custom tweak all of the camera’s imaging settings, from exposure levels and white balance to ISO and focal points.

Its ideal solution for letting you capture that perfect can’t miss shot, just like this image we took while leaning out of a helicopter above London.

The Samsung Galaxy S8’s always-on display is great for glanceable time checking and instant updates on your incoming alerts, emails and general notifications.

Come nightfall when you’re trying to snooze or your battery is quickly circling the drain after a commute-busting gaming session, however, that screen brightening feature can be a nuisance. Don’t worry though, you’re not stuck with it, if you want you can simply switch it off.

To do this you’ll need to head Settings > Lock Screen and Security > Always on Display and switch that toggle to the off position.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 runs Android 7.0 Nougat direct from the box, not that you’d know it.

The phone features a heavily skinned version the Google OS, with the latest Samsung UI bringing a more efficient, complicated interface to the fore.

Having cut much of the clutter, including the dedicated app drawer launch button, the Samsung Galaxy S8’s look is clean and clinical, although one that will take some time to get to grips with.

There’s no need to fret about the lack of app drawer launcher though, you can access all of your apps with a single swipe, no need to clutter your home screen with hundreds of icons.

Although traditional interfaces suggest your need to swipe up from the bottom to access your apps, that’s not the case here. Instead, swiping anywhere on the S8’s home screen will launch the phone’s app drawer. Go on, give it a go.

Back to the camera app, and if you’re finding yourself having to contort your wrist in order to capture the perfect snap – like we were in that helicopter – you’re going to want to make use of the S8’s floating camera shutter button.

Giving you changed freedom, the feature lets you place a digital shutter button anywhere on that massive screen, letting you trigger the camera without having to compromise your shot or dislocate your digits.

To turn this on you’ll need to head into the Camera app and tap the Settings cog in the top right corner.

Here, scrolling down the extensive list of options swiping the toggle on the ‘Floating Camera button’ option will see the roaming trigger appear.

You can now move this shutter wherever you like, simply by dragging it. Welcome to a life of simpler snaps.

If there’s one criticism of the Samsung Galaxy S8, it’s the positioning of its fingerprint scanner. Having moved to the rear of the device in order to allow for that stunning Infinity Display, Samsung has pushed the biometric sensor off centre and made it faintly embarrassed to reach.

When you’re fingers in place to unlock your phone then, you’re going to want to make the most of its positioning. Fortunately, you can add additional functionality to the add-on, letting you swipe down to activate the Notifications window.

You’ll need to turn this feature on before use, and can do so by heading to Settings > Advanced features > Finger sensor gestures.

Now, once the phone is unlocked, swiping down on the fingerprint scanner will pull down the Notifications tab and give you instant access to your alerts, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and audio settings as well as a mass of other features.
